Emerald City Screens at STIFF!

The Seattle film where a director combines elements of an audible medium (Hip Hop) and interprets them visually for his deaf brother, will show at Seattle’s True Independent Film Festival (STIFF).

Henry Darrow McComas explains, “I found a character named Elijah. I identified with Elijah because he was a boy who was becoming a man and was starting to realize that he had to face his insecurities about his craft as well as his fears of death, a recurring theme in Elijah’s life. Emerald City has been to eight festivals across the globe, won two awards and received great reviews, but the news I found out today “takes the cake.”

When Seattle’s Hip-Hop and Film Collides…
The result is Emerald City, a short film about a young man growing up in Seattle. Written and produced by Henry McComas, of Crooked Lake Productions, Emerald City was created with his deaf brother in mind. The tag is embodied both in the production and the film’s plot: “If you can’t hear the music, feel it.”

Emerald City revolves around the recurring vision of main character Elijah, also known as MC Ellipsis. The vision visits Elijah’s childhood in Louisiana, the death of his brother and the mic that he can’t imagine losing. I had a chance to see the film, and the excitement and plot that McComas comfortably fits into the span of 13 minutes is stunning.

The Stranger – Sight Reading

The Making of Emerald City
Henry McComas is close to his older brother, Daniel. Daniel is deaf, and so when they were growing up in Anchorage, Henry would plug his ears with the red wax from cheeses to try to understand his brother’s experience of the world.

Now, Henry wants to make a film that shows his brother what his world is like. “I started thinking about how I could express my love for hiphop to Danny—the challenge of getting the aesthetics of the music across to a deaf person,” explained Henry, who is now living in Seattle and running a small company called Crooked Lake Productions.
